The best stories are true

Hi, I'm Emily

I'm Emily VinZant, MD, a third generation medical doctor who specializes in family medicine and obesity medicine. I live in rural Kansas, spend my days .. and my nights... as the medical director of a large male prison and coaching women to a healthier life. I've got 2 daughters (ages elemantary to 20-some), 3 step-sons (20-30s), a stubborn husband, and a garden that went to weeds this year. I'm a pro at cross-stitch, love a good book, and read the bible every morning over a cup of coffee with my husband. We both run around like crazy managing country land, a young child, and full-time careers. And we are the first to laugh about the insanity of our modern life.

Sound like an unusual path? Only God could come up with that.

The Origin Story

This path has been unexpected and greater than I could have imagined. My adult life started that way and it's been endlessly consistent in that trend.

Here's a few facts to support it:

1. My childhood nickname was "Emo Demo" or "Emo the Demolition Queen"

You can call me Dr. Emily, EVZ, or EmoDemo. I've spent my life figuring out things the hard way. Force over finesse. Turns out Emily means "hard-worker". Combine that with the page boy haircut my mother thought would differentiate me from my older sister (her name means princess and she had long flowing locks) and you build character. I confront life with intrigue and a smile. I'm that girl that all the teachers called on first because I was a little too attentive. Sometimes I take on challenges because they sound fun. Most of the time I complete them. And my husband, Brian, always tells me to quit the nonsense and just relax.

2. I'm a Doctor with real-world wisdom

I had a medical school baby, survived a hurricane, and lived in the Caribbean, New York City, and Kansas before my daughter even started school. I would not be the Doctor I am today without that history. It allowed me to see people differently, to connect, to understand. And that was just my first pregnancy. The next came 14 years later complete with gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, and heart monitors. She would send me on a health journey that led me to where I am today.

3. I'm a teacher at heart

Give me the evidence-based studies and I'll be asking, "what does that mean in real life?" Once I've figured it out, I'm the first to want to share that with others. And I'm always on a quest for that knowledge.

So...

Pray more.

Try fasting.

Take the medications you need when you need them.

Stop overmedicating.

Try a garden and hope your eyes don't swell shut when you go out in it.

Be the example you want for the next generation.

Let God lead the journey and then show up as the best version of you.

If that fits your interests, I invite you to join me on this path.
